ATTENTION WATER CUSTOMER!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT YOUR
REMOTE READ DEVICES
If you have a remote device on the exterior of your property that allows us to read your water meter, we need to verify that it is working properly and recording your water usage accurately. Recent issues with the remotes have caused inaccurate readings and higher customer bills. Please help us keep your readings accurate and costs as low as possible.
Please compare the reading on your remote device with the meter inside your home and contact the MPWC with both readings. Please record both the outside remote reading and the inside meter reading and call the number listed.

Please contact us with your In/Out readings at your earliest convenience so that we can provide accurate billing and correct any discrepancies immediately.
Thank You For Your Cooperation!
FUN FACTS ABOUT THE MPWC AND THE WATER YOUR DRINK
- The Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission was established in 1926.
- The MPWC began delivering water to our customers by horse and carriage over 85 years ago.
- The MPWC has almost 16,000 connections serving nearly 50,000 customers.
- There are 5 water treatment plants.
- There are 14 production wells.
- All 14 wells are drilled into the Potamac Raritan Aquifer and is capable of withdrawing 1000 gallons per minute.
- All 14 wells are permitted through the DEP.
- The DEP limits the amount of water withdrawn from all MPWC wells.
- All water withdrawn from the wells is processed through one of our 5 water treatment plans where it is aerated, filtered and disinfected.
- Prior to leaving the treatment plants, all water is analyzed to assure that quality meets all State and Federal Safe Drinking Water Standards.
- Water quality is monitored 24/7 by State Licensed Water Treatment Operators.
- All treatment plants use high service pumps to pump the water into the system and the elevated storage tanks.
- The amount of water pumped daily is dependent on season – in winter, approximately 5-6 million gallons per day vs. summer at 7-8 million gallons per day.
- There are a total of 6 elevated storage tanks, strategically placed throughout the service area.
- There are (5) 1 million gallon storage tanks and (1) 3 million gallon storage tank.
- Elevated water storage tanks enhance water pressure and provide the pressure needed to take showers, water lawns and fight fires.
- There are over 1,400 fire hydrants in our service area.
- Each gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds.
- One cubic foot of water is equivalent to 7.48 gallons.
- One cubic foot of water weighs 62.4 pounds.
- Each 1 million gallon storage tank holds 8,340,000 lbs or 4,170 tons of water.
- If the MPWC water mains were put into a straight line, we could supply drinking water all the way to Richmond, Virginia!
We at the Merchantville-Pennsauken Water Commission would like to take an opportunity to remind you of our commitment to our customers. The MPWC is a government utility founded by the Borough of Merchantville and the Township of Pennsauken which serves all of the Borough and most of the Township as well as a portion of Cherry Hill and of Camden.
The MPWC’s only business is the betterment and maintenance of the water system for its customers. There are no other stockholders for which a profit is created. The only goal is clean safe drinking water at the most inexpensive price. Our water meets or exceeds every NJDEP and USEPA water quality standard. The MPWC employees and their families all live in these same communities and drink the same water that they produce. We drink the same water that you do.
All of the services we provide are done at a cost that is consistently lower than almost every other water purveyor in South Jersey. In fact when compared to some of the area companies, we are less than half the price. The average family uses approximately 20,000 gallons of water in a quarter. The table below demonstrates the current published local water rates for some area water suppliers.

As a public agency the “profits” at the MPWC are not created for the sake of outside investors like in private water companies. We operate solely on the revenues collected from water, service fees and connection fees. All of these funds are reinvested in the water treatment and distribution system and utilized to maintain the system for the sole benefit of the customers. This system requires that your payments are used exclusively to go toward the water system and in this way insure a dedication to long term planning and sound infrastructure which is uncompromised by other governmental needs.
The next time you turn on your faucet or water your lawn, know that the licensed and dedicated professionals at the MPWC will be there for you. The MPWC phones are staffed 24 hours a day to better serve you, our customers. Our mission continues to be; produce the best possible quality water at the lowest possible rates. We truly care about our customers and the communities that we serve. We are our own customers and we are a part of these communities!
